Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Joey Loperfido is poised to enter 2026 with a genuine opportunity to prove he’s more than a situational bat.
With Spring Training fast approaching, Toronto Blue Jays fans can expect a competitive camp as several outfielders on the 40-man roster battle for playing time.
Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw, Davis Schneider, Jonatan Clase, and Addison Barger will all be in the mix, though assuming good health, most project as bench or depth options.
One name that stands out among that group is Joey Loperfido.
Schneider, for instance, has largely been confined to a platoon role, drawing starts primarily against left-handed pitching unless Anthony Santander is sidelined.
Straw offers elite defense and speed off the bench, while Lukes is coming off an excellent 2025 campaign.
Still, any regression from the veteran could open the door for Loperfido to seize a larger role.
Despite appearing in just 41 games in 2025, Loperfido made a strong impression at the plate.
He slashed .333/.379/.500 with four home runs and an .879 OPS, good for a 140 wRC+.

Perhaps most encouraging was his consistency against both sides of the mound, posting a .329 average versus right-handers and a .350 mark against lefties.
Given the opportunity, Loperfido exceeded expectations.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jays may soon have outfield vacancies to address
Both Daulton Varsho and George Springer are entering walk years, and their potential departures after 2026 would leave holes in the corner outfield.
Loperfido has emerged as one of the more intriguing internal candidates to fill that void.
He brings more than just offensive upside. Ranking in the 81st percentile in sprint speed and posting a 90 percent success rate defensively across left and right field, Loperfido profiles as a capable, athletic defender.
Toronto’s current outfield logjam will be one of the key storylines to monitor this spring, with playing time very much up for grabs.
A year ago, Alan Roden led all Blue Jays hitters in OPS during Spring Training in Dunedin and parlayed that performance into an Opening Day roster spot.
Loperfido, however, endured a rough spring in 2025, batting just .207 with a .717 OPS, which contributed to him not receiving a call-up until early July.
Since arriving at the 2024 trade deadline, Loperfido has made several adjustments to his swing, ultimately settling into a shorter stride that has helped him get to the ball quicker and produce more consistent contact.
His athletic setup and smooth, repeatable left-handed swing suggest his 2025 success may be sustainable.
Like many of the Blue Jays’ young outfielders, Loperfido has just one minor-league option remaining, making 2026 a pivotal year in his development.
Barger faced a similar crossroads last season, beginning the year in Triple-A before earning a mid-April call-up and establishing himself in the majors.
If Loperfido follows a similar path, he could soon become a regular contributor to an already formidable Blue Jays lineup.
