The Toronto Blue Jays have added some power.
Yesterday, baseball insider Eric Truedel noted that the had interest in Juan Yepez.
Today, Truedel's colleague Aram Leighton confirmed that Canada's team did indeed sign the first baseman/outfielder to a minor league deal.
Can confirm Juan Yepez to the Blue Jays on a Minor League deal. @ETreuden all over it!
Fans likely to get first look at Yepez in coming days
While the details are not fully known, it is likely a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training.
Yepez, who is from Venezuela, has played parts of three seasons in the majors, suiting up for the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals
While he has limited experience, there is reason to be excited about the 27-year old, especially when it comes to his power.
In 588 career at-bats across 166 games, Yepez has 20 home runs and 58 RBIs, to go along with a .258/.307/.423 slash line.
He also a positional versatility aspect that the Blue Jays value at a premium rate.
Yepez has experience as at both first base, having played 62 games at first, 32 in left field, and 20 in right, with 45 games as DH sprinkled.
And while the Blue Jays also have Eloy Jimenez who fits a similar profile, having more than veteran stashed in the minors is never a bad thing.
Depending on how long it takes to make the contract official, fans of the Blue Jays should get their first look at Yepez in the coming days.
If all goes well, he'll start the year in Buffalo and be on the radar for a call-up should the need arise.
