The Toronto Blue Jays have been dealt an early-season setback, as pitching prospect Chay Yeager is set to undergo elbow surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Chay Yeager's season is over before it began.
According to Sportsnet reporter Arden Zwelling, the 24-year-old right-hander will have surgery after recently experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow.
Yeager met with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday, where the decision was made to proceed with the operation.
Yeager is having UCL surgery today. He'll miss the 2026 season.
Yeager was on a steady ascent through farm system prior to the injury
In camp this spring as a non-roster invitee, Yeager was looking to build on a promising 2025 season in which he split time between High-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire.
Across the two levels, he logged 55.2 innings before finishing the year on the organization's development list.
He later added eight more innings in the Arizona Fall League, continuing to refine his arsenal against advanced competition.
The hard-throwing reliever was particularly dominant while repeating High-A, posting a sparkling 1.77 ERA and 2.66 FIP over 25 appearances.
He paired that production with an outstanding 22.2 percent strikeout-minus-walk rate and collected four saves, solidifying his reputation as a dependable late-inning option.
Following his promotion to Double-A prior to the All-Star break, Yeager showed flashes of the swing-and-miss stuff that made him intriguing.
Though he endured a few rough outings, he still struck out nearly 25 percent of opposing hitters. In his final appearance of the season with New Hampshire last September, he fanned four of the seven batters he faced - a glimpse of the upside the organization envisioned.
His absence creates a void in the Blue Jays' upper-level relief depth.
Selected in the 12th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Yeager was tracking toward a potential Triple-A opportunity later this year.
With Rule 5 eligibility looming next offseason, 2026 represented a pivotal development year for the Indiana native.
Instead, the Fort Wayne product will now focus on recovery. Over three minor-league seasons, Yeager has appeared in 90 games across four levels, compiling a 3.97 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 118 innings.
He was originally drafted out of Pasco-Hernando State College in Florida and had steadily climbed the organizational ladder before this latest setback.
