The Toronto Blue Jays have added a local talent to their system, signing Quebec native Mathieu Vallée to a minor-league contract.

While much of the attention in recent hours has centered around Toronto's agreement with three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer on a one-year deal, the organization has also continued the steady work of building depth behind the scenes.
Scherzer's return after spending the 2025 season in Canada made headlines, especially with speculation about a reunion swirling for weeks.
But as is often the case in Major League Baseball, there are plenty of quieter moves that matter just as much to an organization's long-term outlook.
Mathieu Vallee's signing is one of those moves.
The 25-year-old outfielder, well known in Trois-Rivières for his time with the Aigles, now joins the Blue Jays organization with a chance to prove himself at the affiliated level.
He agreed to a minor-league deal and will not be part of big-league camp this spring, meaning he's expected to begin the 2026 season with one of Toronto's minor-league affiliates.

Big opportunity for Vallee to get his foot in the door

Vallée brings an intriguing skill set, highlighted by elite speed. In 2025, he stole an eye-popping 83 bases in just 88 games while hitting .352 and collecting 127 hits.
His .428 on-base percentage underscores his offensive profile: while he may not be known for his power, he consistently finds ways to reach base and immediately becomes a threat once he's there.
That combination of contact ability and speed can create pressure on opposing defenses and change the tempo of a game.

Before turning pro, Vallée played collegiately in both Dallas and Illinois. After finishing his college career, he returned home to Quebec and spent two seasons playing in Mauricie, where he continued to refine his game and showcase his speed.
He's not the only Quebec-born player in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system, either. Catcher Nicolas Deschamps remains with the organization and split time last season between Vancouver and New Hampshire.
For Vallée, the path to the majors won't be easy, but the opportunity is there. And for a player from Trois-Rivières, signing with a Canadian organization represents both a professional step forward and a meaningful homegrown connection.
