Former major league Octavio Dotel has died in a tragic accident. In the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Dominican Republic, the roof of Jet Set night club in Santo Domingo collapsed. Dotel was one of 27 people killed. He was 51 years old.
Multiple sources out of the DR have reported this, including Dario Libro.
Details are still coming through but it appears that several hundred people were at the venue for a concert prior to the collapse. While many people were pulled out alive, Dario Libro reports that Dotel was trapped for 11 hours and was taken to the hospital without vital signs.
It was initially reported that he was pulled out alive, but recent stories indicated that he was already deceased when he arrived at the hospital. People are reportedly still being pulled from the wreckage and the number of fatalities and survivors are likely to change.
During his playing days, Dotel was known a lovable journeyman around the league. He played for a then-record 13 big league teams, including a half-season with the
Blue Jays in 2011. He was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals as part of a massive deal for Colby Rasmus.
One of the other players involved in that deal, pitcher Edwin Jackson, would later break Dotel's record in 2019 when he suited up for his 14th team. That team happened to be the Toronto Blue Jays.
He put up decent numbers in his brief stint with Toronto, going 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and one save in 36 games.
Blue Jays Central sends its condolences to Dotel's family as well as the hundreds of others impacted by this tragedy.
