The death toll following the roof collapse of the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic is now at approximately 221. Politician Tony Pena Guava has called it the "worst non-atmospheric disaster" in the country's history. However, some good news has now arisen.
Former Major League second baseman Esteban German survived the accident and his life was apparently saved by a former teammate: Tony Blanco. Blanco lost his life in tragedy, along with longtime pitcher Octavio Dotel, and Nelsy Cruz, sister of 7X All-Star Nelson Cruz.
MLB insider Hector Gomez heard from German directly and reported that he just returned from bathroom at the time of the collapse and that Blanco pushed him out of the way as he sat down. Blanco died seconds later.
German played 10 seasons in the majors for the Athletics, Royals, and Rangers. His best season came in 2006 with Kansas City in 2006 when he hit .326/.422/.459 with three home runs and 34 RBIs in 106 games. Seven of his career eight home runs came while playing in KC.
Across his seasons he slashed .280/.359/.386 with 11 RBIs in 409 career games.
After his major league career ended, German spent four years playing in the NPB in Japan, suiting up for both the Saitama Seibu Lions and Orix Buffaloes.
The death toll has risen significantly in the last 48 hours as search and rescue effort now enter their third day.
Blue Jays Central sends its condolences to the families and friends of all involved.
