Mazeroski hit one of the biggest World Series home runs of all-time
Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year major-league career with the Pirates from 1956 to 1972, carving out a reputation as one of the finest defensive second basemen the game has ever seen.
While his glove work earned widespread respect, he will forever be remembered for one unforgettable swing of the bat.
In Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, Mazeroski delivered one of the most dramatic moments in baseball history.
Pittsburgh had captured its first National League pennant since 1927 behind a roster that featured eight All-Stars, including Mazeroski.
Still, they were up against a powerhouse New York Yankees club led by stars such as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Whitey Ford.
With the series deadlocked at three games apiece, Game 7 turned into a back-and-forth thriller.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mazeroski stepped to the plate against Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry.
On a 1-0 pitch, he connected on a high fastball and sent it soaring over the left-center field wall, giving the Pirates a stunning 10-9 victory and clinching the championship.

It was Pittsburgh’s first World Series title since 1925 and marked the first time a Fall Classic ended on a walk-off home run.
More than six decades later, Mazeroski’s blast remains one of the most celebrated and iconic home runs the sport has ever witnessed.
Signed by the Pirates organization out of high school in 1954, Mazeroski quickly rose through the minor leagues and made his major-league debut in July 1956 at just 19 years old.
By 1957, in his first full season, he had established himself as a reliable, contact-driven hitter, batting .283 with 149 hits and 59 runs scored.
His 1958 campaign stands out as arguably his finest all-around season. Mazeroski hit .275/.308/.439 across 607 plate appearances, collecting 156 hits and a career-high 19 home runs.
That year, he earned his first All-Star selection, captured his first Gold Glove Award, and finished eighth in National League MVP voting.
Over nearly two decades in Pittsburgh, Mazeroski built a legacy defined by elite defense, durability, and one of baseball’s most unforgettable moments.
He remains one of the greatest players in Pirates history and an enduring symbol of championship glory.
We here at Blue Jays Central extend our heartfelt condolences to Mazeroski’s family, friends, former teammates, and fans throughout the baseball community.
