Atkins: Roster upgrades likely to come via trades.

However, pursuing trades makes sense for other reasons.

With recent signings of Scherzer, Anthony Santander, and Jeff Hoffman, the Blue Jaysare now projected to exceed the second luxury tax threshold.

With most of their key needs addressed, Atkins and Blue Jays President Mark Shapiro can now shift their focus to contract extension talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

According to MLB's Hector Gomez, the two sides are reportedly close to a deal.

Should the Blue Jays opt for a trade, expect them to deal from a position of depth.

The team boasts a wealth of middle infielders, fourth outfielders, and other league-ready prospects who could serve as centrepieces in any potential deal.

Candidates to be dealt include Addison Barger, Davis Schneider, Orelvis Martinez, Nathan Lukes, and possibly even Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman.

It's also possible that the Blue Jays decide to stand pat until the season begins, confident in the current group of players that will be at Spring Training in Dunedin
