Baseball insider says Jays should hit panic button on Santander

Anthony Santander is a notorious slow starter. It's a line that's been over and over again this season. It's part of his identity. Even with that in mind, he has174/.260/.294 slash line, a -0.6 bWAR and sports an OPS+ of 59.
So ugly is his start, that MLB insider Jeff Passan says that Santander is one of "five players whose slow starts warrant panic". It may seem extreme given the first month of the season, but it's not an egregious statement.
While Santander is tied for the team lead in home runs with three, he has a batting average below .200., hasn't looked great in the outfield, and has spent more time as the designated hitter than he has anywhere else.
In Passan's eyes, the contract definitely plays a factor in declaring panic.
"Spending the first month as a $92.5 million free agent below the Mendoza Line is tough. Doing so with a barrel rate that has cratered and only three home runs this year after hitting 44 is doubly so. - Jeff Passan
Santader's rough start is indicative of the
Blue Jays last few yaers. Their power, as well as their overall offensive production has plummeted in the last two-years plus.
The Blue Jays have lost eight of nine. And while it's still early and no one is sounding the alarm just yet, Santader will need to turn it around, and quickly, if the Blue Jays expect to contend in 2025.
If the Blue Jays do well, all te pnaic will quickly be forgotten. If the Blue Jays continue to struggle, then Schneider could be in for a long season.
