The Toronto Blue Jays continue to add pitching depth at the lower levels. On Friday, the signed International Free Agent right-handed pitcher Daniel De Laz Cruz to a minor league deal.
Although it hasn't been officially announced yet, De La Cruz will presumably be assigned to
DSL Blue Jays Red, as is the case with most UFA's signed out of the Caribbean and Latin America.
At 17, De La Cruz will be a long-term project. As with many of the Jays low-cost, UFA signings, De La Cruz will likely be in the
Dominican Summer League for at least a year before he comes stateside.
Not much else is known about De La Cruz, outside of his age. Details, including a scouting report, will be revealed in the coming days and weeks.
The signing of De La Cruz continues a season-long pattern by the Blue Jays, who have signed several low-cost, low-risk, high-reward players, with most signings being pitchers and shortstops.
The Blue Jays, like most major league organizations, have two teams in the Dominican Summer League, Red and Blue. The DSL is a way for teams to stack their roster with international prospects, many of whom, have never left their own country.
DSL stints can either be a short-term solution while visa issues are worked out, or a longer developmental play. The fluidity of the rosters means that many prospects never make it stateside, although that many progress to the Rookie League within their first year.
Now, De La Cruz is the latest name added to the crop. An intriguing pitcher with a high upside.
