While the Toronto Blue Jays lost 5-1 to the Houston Astros, dropping their second straight game to Houston and fourth in a row overall, they did achieve on thing they had been unable to do for a few days. They hit a ball over the fence.

It came from an unlikely source too: Centre fielder Nathan Lukes. It was Lukes' first home run of the season and just the second of his career, and accounted for the only run the Blue Jays have scored in the first 18 innings of this series.
It happened with nobody on and two out in the top of the third inning and was one of only two hits the Blue Jays could muster on Tuesday evening. It was the Jays 13th home run of the year, which puts 29th out of 30 teams.
Lukes, who isn't off to the strongest start, going just 6-30 for an average of .200, has gotten a hit in two consecutive games. While he will never be a power hitter, he does have occasional pop and is riding a strong 2024, a season in which he slashed .303/.371/.818
While one home run from the number nine hitter certainly won't solve the Blue Jays hitting woes, it does speak to their overall team philosophy about getting hits from top-to-bottom. Everybody also knows their role.
For Lukes, it's simply, be ready. He knows what he has, he knows what he can do. On Tuesday, he did something extra.
Now if only the rest of the team can follow suit. The power is there, the Blue Jays just need to find a way to unleash it.
