In his debut professional game, Stephen went five scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out six and walking just one.
Just, it's just one start in a long season, but considering the trouble the
Blue Jays have keeping their pitching prospects healthy, and considering how one can never have too much pitching, Stephen has definitely opened some eyes and inserted himself in future conversations.
The Blue Jays selected Stephen in the second round of the 2024 draft and signed him for an above-slot value of $1.12MM. While he started out as a reliever with Purdue University, he became a starter in his Sophomore year.
After a strong showing in the Cape Cod League, he transferred to Mississippi State, where he posted a 3.28 ERA with 107 strikeouts and 21 walks in 96 innings.
Much like Yesavage, he didn't pitch with an affiliate after getting drafted, but got a great reputation after working with staff at the Florida Complex.
Although Stephen is starting at Low-A, he is a candidate to move quickly and it wouldn't be surprising to see him at Vancouver or even New Hampshire by season's end.
He had 96 innings in his final season of college ball, so he has a high floor and will be able to move to a full season quicker than most. He could be a number 4 or 5 starter in the big leagues in no time.
