Blue Jays reportedly sign free agent shortstop

While the Blue Jays have officially signed 27 international players since the new signing period came into effect on January 15th, the actual number may be higher.

One player whose name hasn't been included on the list, is 16 year old shorstop David Vargas.

While there has been no word or official transaction on behalf of the Blue Jays, both Spotrac and MLB insider and international prospect Francys Romero have Vargas listed among the players signed by Toronto.

According to Spotrac, Vargas has been given a signing bonus $300K, which would be the fourth-highest total given out by the Blue Jays this signing period.

As Vargas is just 16 and still in high school, there is limited information about him.

According to scouting website PerfectGame.org, Vargas is 5-11, 175 lbs.

The report goes on to state that Vargas has a "Medium athletic build with lots of room to get stronger. Left-handed hitter, sets up with an open stance and an inward toe tap trigger, has rhythm and looseness to his hands and fires him on time, very high contact swing with advanced barrel control, contact to all fields, very projectable young hitter.»

He is a primary shortstop on defence, with decent arm strength and comfortable footwork.

Where Vargas excels however, is his power. In just 42 games at shortstop, the 16 year old has scored 30 runs and added 22 RBIs while striking out only 14 times in 144 plate apperances.
