The Vladimir Guerrero Jr. saga has taken an interesting turn. The Toronto Blue Jays are allegedly set making a new contract offer to the slugging first 1st baseman.
Spanish language reporter and z101 contributor Hector Gomez was first to report on the news.
According to Gomez' sources, the new offer would be for 14-15 years and be in the range of $550-600M, which is much closer in line to Guerreros asking price.
The question is whether Guerrero, who had previously set the beginning of Spring Training as a cut-off date for talks, will listen to the Blue Jays offer or whether he will stick to his word and not negotiate until the season is over.
Guerrero and the Blue Jays were unable to come to an agreement earlier this offseason, with the difference between the two siders reportedly being $50MM. One sticking point was the inclusion of differed money, something Vladdy was evidently not interested in.
Evidently the Blue Jays alleged new offer, has a significantly higher base value. Whatever the final number ends up being, it would far and away be the largest contract in Blue Jays history. That record is currently held by George Springer and his six year, $150MM deal.
If Guerrero does decide to change his mind and agrees to the deal with the Blue Jays, especially before the season starts, it would be a major victory for Ross Atkins and the front office, who continue to feel the wrath of an unhappy fanbase.
Guerrero A long-term Guerrero deal, along with the additions of Max Scherzer and Anthony Santander, would have to make the Blue Jays and their fans feel better about their chances of winning.
