The Toronto Blue Jays continue to add depth at the lower levels. Last week, it was announced that they signed right-handed pitcher Enyer Dominguez, a 17 year old out of the Dominican Republic. The news was official as of April 25th.
Like most of these signings, Dominguez was assigned to the
DSL Blue Jays. It was also slightly different though as he was assigned to the red team, as opposed to the blue team.
There are two Dominican Summer League teams that the Blue Jays stock with prospects and Caribbean and Latin American IFAs. It is likely that any future IFAs will be put on the red team.
Not much is known about Dominguez, but it appears that he spent at least some of 2024 with the
Valdez Baseball Academy in his hometown of Santo Domingo.
At 17, Dominguez likely doesn't even see the Florida Complex League for at least another two years, possibly longer. There is often a longer development process for international IFA's who are signed at 16 and 17.
Sometimes it has to do with the facilities available, and many of them have never held a passport.
Many IFA's also never reach the majors, but at 10K a pop its a low-risk investment that many teams are comfortable making.
Earlier this year, the Blue Jays used the bulk of their bonus pool money to stock up pitchers, shortstops, and a very intriguing catcher. Since then, it has been almost exclusively pitchers.
It is unknown what the future holds for Dominguez, but moves of this nature are never a bad thing.
