Blue Jays to sign Jose Urena

Ureņa, 33, signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets in February after spending 2024 with the New York Mets. He had some success at Triple-A Syracuse, but gave up five runs in three innings in his lone appearance in the majors this season. The Mets DFA'd him two days later.
Ureņa spent the first six seasons of his career with the Miami Marlins. Toronto will be Ureņa's seventh team since being non-tendered by the fish at the end of 2020.
While Ureņa has 152 career starts, he had more relief appearances than starts last year and will likely be used in long relief out of the pen by John Schneider and Pete Walker.
Ureņa's best season was in 2017 with Miami when he went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 34 games, 28 of which were starts.
Ureņa's signing gives the Blue Jays a bonafide long man out of the pen, and likely means that Yariel Rodriguez will be kept to shorter one inning appearances. It could also spell the end for Eric Lauer.
It could also be a short-term solution. With Max Scherzer due back by the end of May, there may not be room on the roster for both Ureņa and Turnbull.
Financial terms of the deal, which is still pending a physical, have not been disclosed.
