The Toronto Blue Jays have signed RHP Manuel Suero to a minor-league deal. Like many others who come out of Latin America and the Caribbean, Suero was assigned to DSL Blue Jays 2 in the Dominican Summer League.
Suero comes from Cotui, a town of roughly 80,000 that serves as the capital of the Sanchez Ramirez Province in the Cibao region of the Dominican Republic and is considered one of the oldest cities in the new world.
Suero is a big man. Just 19, he comes in at 6'5, 215 lbs, a tall, but lanky figure that will be imposing on the mound.
The Blue Jays are at a slight advantage with Suero compared to some of their other recent IFA signings. As Suero was already in the Dominican Republic, he didn't need to be placed on the restricted list and instead will be active right away.
Other prospects on the DSL 2 squad include catcher Keegan Pieternella, shortstop Elaineiker Coronado, and pitcher Alexander Valiente.
The Dominican Summer League is often used as place for IFA's and low-level Caribbean prospects to get their first taste of professional, minor-league level ball and allows the Blue Jays to determine whether or not to continue their development.
In addition to the signing of Suero, it was also announced that pitcher
Erinyel Marquez has been activated from the restricted list. Like Suero, Marquez is part of DSL Blue Jays but was inactive while the team presumably dealt with a visa issue. Marquez is from Venezuela.
The Blue Jays have been able to sign extra International Free Agents thanks to the additional bonus money they acquired from Cleveland in the
Myles Strawtrade. Although they didn't get
Roki Sasaki, they are definitely putting it to good use.
