After starting games 1 and 5 of the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners, the ace of the Blue Jays pitching staff stated after yesterday's loss that we will make himself available out of the bullpen for Game 7, should the series make it that far.
While we've Gausman seen in the bullpen before, he and fellow starter Trey Yesavage famously jogged out to the bullpen during Toronto's Game 4 victory against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, that appeared to be for show.
This time however, it seems genuine.
With Yesavage tapped to start Game 6, Shane Bieber likely gets the ball in Game 7. However, with it being the final game of the series, it could be an all hands on deck type of situation.
Kevin Gausman says he'll be out there in the Blue Jays' bullpen «cleated up and ready to go» for G7
Gausman no stranger to pitching out of bullpen in a playoff game
Though he has been a starter for all of his major league career, pitching out of the pen is not a foreign concept for the 34 year-old.
His last playoff relief appearance came in 2021 as a member of the San Francisco Giants. In that game, he entered in the ninth inning of a Game 5 loss and got two outs.
While it's unlikely he would enter Game 7 that late, John Schneider has said that nothing is off the table.
