Last season, Van Eyk played in Double-A and Triple-A, and between the two spots, went 6-10 with a 4.79 ERA in 27 games, including 24 starts.
Van Eyk was in the Mexican Winter League ahead of spring training and having a ton of success.
He played for Aguilas de Mexicali and is 2-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 9 starts, while he struck out 53 over 49.2 innings pitched.
Van Eyk's counterpart Jesus Luzardo allowed two hits and no walks in three shutout innings in his last outing against Boston. He struck out five.
The hard-throwing southpaw appeared to be just about in midseason form getting the velocity on his fastball as high as 98.5 mph.
Luzardo is looking to build off an excellent first campaign with the Phillies a year ago, where he went 15-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 183 2/3 innings and was tied for second in the NL with 216 strikeouts. He finished seventh in NL Cy Young Award voting.
