Toronto Blue Jays rookie third-baseman Kazuma Okamoto is, by definition, this team’s unknown player.
Set to turn 30 in June, Kazuma Okamoto arrives with an already impressive résumé from Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
He debuted with the Yomiuri Giants in 2015 at just 19 years old and went on to slug 248 home runs over 11 seasons.
His standout campaign came in 2023, when he delivered 41 home runs, a .958 OPS, and 140 hits in 140 games.
Over his career in Japan, Okamoto led the league in home runs three times, earned six All-Star selections, and posted a lifetime .856 OPS.
With six seasons of 30 or more home runs, his offensive ceiling has never been in doubt.
The lingering question, as always with international transitions, is how that success will translate with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Adjusting to new pitching, a different competitive environment, and life in a new country can be challenging.
Still, in his short time with the organization, Okamoto has already made a strong impression.
Okamoto does his talking with his bat and slick defense
While his sample size in Grapefruit League play is limited and should be viewed cautiously, the underlying metrics are encouraging.
Five of his seven balls in play have left the bat at over 95 mph, including a 103.4 mph home run off Clay Holmes of the New York Mets that traveled 431 feet.
Kazuma Okamoto just launched the first home run of his #BlueJays career. 431 feet to dead centre.
He also ripped a 108.9 mph double against the New York Yankees after returning from World Baseball Classic.
108 OFF THE BAT FOR KAZUMA OKAMOTO. START THE SEASON TOMORROW
Defensively, Okamoto has looked comfortable, and sharp at third base this spring.
That stability could give the Blue Jays added flexibility, allowing Addison Barger to see more time in the outfield and helping lengthen the lineup.
Still in awe of Kazuma Okamoto's defence 😱 和真の守備の凄さはいまだに信じられない!
If everything clicks, a successful rookie season for Okamoto might look like a 115 wRC+, around 20 home runs, and 75 RBIs, paired with steady defense at third base.
He doesn’t need to be elite right away, just slightly above-average at the plate while handling routine plays in the field would be more than enough.
The encouraging part for Toronto is that he’s already showing signs he can meet those expectations.
Few players on this roster have the potential to shift the team’s direction in 2026 quite like Okamoto.
