Cavan Biggio inks minor league deal with Kansas City Royals
Who remembers Cavan Biggio?
The one-time prospect of the future for the Blue Jays - along with Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. - has struggled to find himself after being cut by the Blue Jays last year, spending time both Atlanta and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now a team has entered the chat. The Kansas City Royals announced that they have signed the former Blue Jays super utility player to minor league contract. Official terms have not been disclosed, but it presumably comes with an invitation to Spring Training.
After a strong rookie campaign which saw him hit 16 home runs in 100 games, Biggio followed that with a decent 2020. Since then however, the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio has struggled to find consistency, especially after moving to third base for the 2021 season.
While he still has potential, Biggio is now 29 years old and might be destined to spend the rest of his career as a fringe player.
Given his defensive versatility however, (he has appeared at every position except pitcher and catcher throughout his career), Biggio can still add value at the big league level.
While he will never hit a for a high average, he has a good eye at the plate, a low strike out rate, and a propensity to get on-base.
If Cavan makes the Royals out of Spring Training, he will most likely serve a role similar to the one he had on the Blue Jays.
