We now know the extent of the Blue Jays negotiations with Corbin Burnes and Alex Bergman. The two All-stars were among a number of high-profile free agents connected to Toronto this offseason. Burnes ended up signing a six year deal with Arizona, while Alex Bregman went to the Boston Red Sox.
In his latest column in USA Today,
Bob Nightingale has elaborated on what the Blue Jays offers were.
In terms of Burnes, who described the
Diamondbacks offer as by far the best he got, the sticking point seemed to be deferred money. It turns that not only was the Blue Jays offer low, but also included up to 75% deferred money.
While the exact financial figure isn't known, it seems like the Blue Jays offered more than the $210MM that Burnes ultimately signed for, however the amount of deferred money included would have taken the contract's value to below what he received with Arizona.
While Arizona's deal with Burnes does include $64MM in deferrals as well as an opt-out after 2026, clearly it wasn't deferred nearly as much as the Blue Jays.
As for Bregman, it would appear that the Blue Jays never even made an offer to the now-Red Sox third baseman or even really engage with him, Reports of any serious talks were overblown, as sometimes happens in the offseason.
Given that the Blue Jays needed either a second or a third baseman heading into 2025, it would have made sense to at least check in on Bregman. But it looks like that didn't happen
The Blue Jays did end up getting their men, trading for
Andres Gimenez and signing
Max Scherzer. But still, I'm sure many fans will wonder what if.
