Dillon Tate clears waivers, accepts outright assignment

Dillon Tate is sticking with the Toronto Blue Jays. After being designated for assignment last week, the right-hander has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Buffalo.
When a player is outrighted, he remains with the team but is removed from the 40-man roster. While Tate will continue to provide depth for the club, the Blue Jays will need to make another 40-man roster move should they select his contract and call him back up.
The reliever was designated on Friday in order to clear a roster spot for
Michael Stefanic, was called up to provide insurance in the wake of
Andres Gimenez' injury. He had been optioned back to Triple-A a few days earlier to make room for pitcher Braydon Fisher.
Players with more than three years of service time are allowed to reject and outright assignment and elect free agency. However, in this case, Tate chase to stay the course.
Given Tate's experience, there is a good chance he will see time in majors again this season. While his numbers haven't blown anybody away, Tate has been a reliable middle relief option over the years and even has nine saves.
That being said, he has a -0.1 WAR and a 5.19 ERA in 8.2 innings across nine games for Toronto, dating back to August of last year. It's very likely the reason he passed through waivers.
Overall, for his career, Tate is 7-14 with a 4.11 ERA and saves. He has 177 strikeouts in 221 innings across 195 games for
Baltimore and Toronto. He has appeared in five games for the Blue Jays this season.
