A former member of the Toronto Blue Jays is set to receive one of major league baseball's highest honours.
Jeff Kent who has the most career home runs by a second baseman, was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame this past November by the Modern Era baseball committee.
Forever 21: The @sfgiants will retire Jeff Kent's number on Aug. 29 in celebration of his Hall of Fame induction.
Kent suited up for six teams during his career, but made his debut with the Blue Jays in 1992, before being traded away in July for pitching legend David Cone.
And while Kent had successful, multi-year stints with several teams, he is most remembered for his time on the San Francisco Giants where he hit behind Barry Bonds.
Perhaps it is because of this that the Giants have decided to retire Kent's #21. The official ceremony will be on August 29th.
Kent's 21 will be the fifteenth number retired by the Giants. Of out the other 14, all but two - Bonds and Will Clark - are in the Hall of Fame.
Others Giants honoured in this way are legendary manager John McGraw and early pitching CChristy Mathewson, whose careers both predate jersey numbers; instead they carry the honorific NY, as they were both part of the Giants when they were based in New York.
Other players include the Say Hey Kid Willie Mays, slugging outfielder Mell Ott, first basemen Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda, and pitchers Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal.
Like other teams, the Giants have also retired 42 in honour of Jackie Robinson
No decision on cap depiction
While an official announcement has not yet been made, Kent has expressed desire to be depicted with a Giants cap on his Hall of Fame plaque.
Although the Hall has the final say, players are consulted about cap preference.
On Tuesday, the baseball world will find out whether Kent will have any company as the results of the writers ballot will be revealed.
