Brett de Geus' roller coaster of a season has continued. The right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies. He had been designated for assignment earlier in the week by the Marlins. Following the signing, he was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
de Geus has 61.2 innings of big league experience, with most of that coming as Rule 5 pick in 2021, though he also appeared in 13 games last year, suiting up for three different teams, including two games with the Blue Jays towards the end of the season.
Since being DFA'd by the
Mariners in August, de Geus has been through the Marlins,
Blue Jays,
Pirates, Marlins again, and now the Phillies. It has been quite the ride for the 27 year old.
Sporting a 7.48 career ERA, de Geus has to figure it all out and put it together. Still, as a player that still has options left, the Phillies see enough in him to take a chance.
He has the stuff to succeed. His fastball averages at about 98 mph last year, while his sinker averages about 96.4 mph. He also has a splitter, knuckle curve, and cutter.
While he had an ERA over 5.00 in 39 minor league innings last year, he did induce groundballs at a rate of 56.6%, slightly higher than his 52% clip in the majors.
Hopefully he can stick on the Phillies roster long enough to work on his control issues. If he is able to overcome his struggles, he could be valuable depth for Philadelphia's bullpen this season.
