Jesse Chavez pitching for the Blue Jays

The Atlanta Braves have designated Jesse Chavez for assignment. The move was in response to the team selecting the contract of fellow right-hander Zach Thompson. The Braves now have seven days to trade, release, or outright Chavez.

Chavez, whose contract was selected by the Braves on Monday, appeared in a single game this season, pitching two innings and giving up one run. It was his fourth stint with the team and his 18th overall season in the major leagues.
Chavez has been down this road before. He has been cut or traded by Atlanta several times before but has also re-signed with the team on minor league deals at least twice.
If the Braves end up trading Chavez, it will add to his record total. Chavez is the most traded player in history, having been dealt 11 times over the course of his career. Considering he has only played for nine different teams, that is quite an accomplishment.
Although Chavez is now 41, he could still be a valuable, low-risk option for many teams looking to increase bullpen depth. Chavez has done just about everything in his career, having started 85 games, as well as saving nine.
He was a full-time starter for two years while playing for the Athletics, but has mainly been a middle and long reliever throughout his career.
It is possible that Chavez sticks with Atlanta, which has been his longest home throughout his career. He could either accept an outright assignment or get released and then re-sign a minor league. Or the Braves could trade him or do nothing.
Whatever happens, Chavez has had a nice career.
