Former Blue Jays pitcher closes out win as Team Canada beats up on Colombia

Team Canada is off and running.
The inaugural game in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, which was played at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico, ended in an 8-2 victory. They are now 1-0 on the tournament.
Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Phillippe Aumont, who signed a minor league contract this offseason to be eligible for the tournament got the final out to secure the win.

Canada aiming to move past group stage for the first time
Calgary, Alberta's Mike Soroka, formerly of the Atlanta Braves and currently with the Arizona Diamondbacks, picked up the win, after giving up four hits and one run in three innings.
Team Canada was helped by a strong performance from Abraham Toro, who went 2-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, as well as starting left fielder Owen Caissie, who opened the scoring with a two run home run in the second inning.

Former Blue Jays shortstop Otto Lopez ended the game 0-3.
Team Colombia also fielded a couple of former Jays with Gio Urshela starting the game at 3rd base, while Harold Ramirez roamed left field.
Although Canada has competed in every World Baseball Classic since the tournament began in 2006, they have never advanced past the group stage. 2026 might be their best change yet.
With a victory against Colombia, they are off to a good start.
