The Mariners and Lawrence have been through this before as, the right-hander re-signed with the M's earlier in the week after previously being DFA'd. It is likely that the process will repeat itself and that Lawrence will re-sign on a minor league deal.
Lawrence gets DFA'd after appearing in back-to-back games for the Mariners against his former team, the
Toronto Blue Jays. He also appeared in a game on April 9th, in which he pitched the final three innings for the win.
Overall, he has three appearances this season and is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA.
Lawrence made his debut with the Blue Jays as a 29-year old in 2017 after being signed as an un-drafted free agent back in 2010. He was claimed off waivers by the Mariners, spent a year in Japan, before re-surfacing with the Blue Jays and the Cardinals.
In his place, the Mariners will be getting Lao, who has made three starts for Triple-A Tacoma this year and is 6-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 77 games.
Lao was actually drafted as a first baseman before transitioning to the mound in 2022. His first appearance will be his major league debut.
The Mariners will have one week to decide what to do with Lawrence. There seems to be mutual interest in a reunion and Lawrence will likely reject an outright assignment, select free agency, and re-sign with the Mariners. If he does so, it will be Lawrence's fifth time going through that process with Seattle.
For his career, Lawrence is. 5-4 with a 6.63 ERA in 62 games, including two starts.
