The New York Mets are considering Tommy John surgery for reliever Danny Young, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Friday. Earlier in the day, Young had been placed on the IL with an elbow sprain.
While a final determination hasn't been made, Young is likely out for an extended period of time, given the type of injury.
Elbow injuries, and in particular sprains, can be difficult to navigate but often involve some degree of ligament stretching or tearing. Often times the damage is significant enough to require surgical repair. Like with most cases of this nature, the Mets and Young will seek multiple opinions before deciding on a course of action.
Young was signed by the Mets in the 2023-204 offseason after spending the last season and a half with the
Atlanta Braves. He made his major league debut with the
Mariners in 2022.
He was originally drafted by the
Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth round of the 2015 and made it all the way to Triple-A, before being selected in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft by
Cleveland in 2019. After mixed success with them in Triple-A, he signed a minor league deal with Seattle.
Yoiung and A.J. Minter represented the only left-handed options for Mendoza out of the bullpen and both have gone down with injuries in the last few days.
Two other former Blue Jays - Genesis Cabrera and converted outfielder Anthony Gose - are the only other lefties on the 40-man roster and could be summoned to Queens, while Brooks Raley is scheduled for a late-season return.
Young will likely move to the 60-Day IL in due time.
