The Atlanta Braves have selected the contract of right-hander Jesse Chavez and he will be active for tonight's game. In a corresponding move, Hector Neris has been designated for assignment.
Chavez signed a minor league to return to Atlanta after being released by the Rangers prior to the start of the season. Depending on how one views it, it is either Chavez' fourth, or fifth stint with the team.
Chavez has played for ten teams in major league career, including two separate stints with the Blue Jays in 2012 and 2016. Toronto was the first team he returned after having already played for them.
Chavez first came to the Braves in 2010, being traded from the Rays for Rafael Soriano. He was traded midway through the season to the Royals, included in a package for Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth.
It would be another decade before he returned to the peach state, cycling through six different teams before returning in 2021.
After a brief return to the Cubs in 2022, Chavez was traded back to the Braves in April and then to the Angels in August. He re-signed with the Braves after being released by Los Angeles. He ultimately stuck with them through the end of 2023.
Claimed and then released by the White Sox he went back to Atlanta again for 2024 before repeating the same process with the Rangers this offseason. Look for Atlanta to use him in a middle-relief role.
For his career Chavez is 51-65 with a 4.24 ERA in 653 games including 85 starts and nine saves. He will turn 42 in August.
