The Blue Jays might have a new set-up man. It could complicate the bullpen

While Rodriguez was a starter last year and had continued to be stretched out this spring, the Blue Jays were always interested in the idea of using him in shorter spurts. He was a closer in both Cuba and Japan and seems much more comfortable in a late-inning kind of role.

Here's where things get complicated.

If the Blue Jays do decide to keep Rodriguez in a more traditional set-up role, they lose Rodriguez as the long man out of the pen. A bullpen comprised solely of middle relievers, set-up guys, and a closer, no matter how good, is lacking.

So where does that leave the Blue Jays?

Easton Lucas is with the team, but he figures to take Max Scherzer's spot in the rotation, at least for the time being. Brendon Little is a candidate to be stretched out but the Blue Jays and John Schneider also like him where he is.

The Blue Jays don't yet know what they have with Mason Fluharty, but at least in the minors he was a two-inning guy at max.

It's why the decision to let Ryan Yarbrough walk grows curiouser by the day.

If anybody can get creative with how they utilize their pitchers, it's the Blue Jays. And it's not the worst problem to have. Still, it's one that the Blue Jays would like to solve sooner rather than later.

It may still be Rodriguez by default, but after so much uncertainty and inconsistency, he finally have found himself.
