Jeff Hoffman picked up his first save as a member of the Toronto Blue Jayson Sunday afternoon. In an interesting twist of fate, it came against the very team he had an agreement with before they voided it due to concerns with his physical: the Baltimore Orioles.

Yes, before Hoffman inked a three-year pact with the Jays, returning to the team that drafted him, the Orioles had a similar agreement in place with the closer. Baltimore had offered Hoffman a three year, $40MM deal before backing out due to concerns raised with his throwing shoulder.
They weren't the only team. The Atlanta Braves also backed out after initially offering a five year, $48MM deal. They were interested in Hoffman as a starter. After both of those failed signings, the Blue Jays swooped in and gave Hoffman $33MM.
Every team evaluates injuries and physicals differently and evidently the Blue Jays had a different role in mind for Hoffman and showed less concern for his shoulder.
They seemed to be have proven right as Hoffman has been sharp and durable in his first two for the Jays, throwing 20 pitches in Saturday's game and another 18 in Sunday's appearance on route to his first save of the season.
It is unknown what role the Orioles had for Hoffman, but given the return of closer Felix Bautista it's unlikely Hoffman would have seen regular ninth inning action.
What could have been has turned into what is for the Blue Jays and so far their gamble seems to be paying off.
But it's early.
