The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 in Sunday afternoon action at Rogers. With the win, Toronto salvages a series split and moves to 2-2 on the season.
Chris Bassitt got the start for the Blue Jays, while Tomoyuki Sugano took the hill for the O's, making his major league debut.
Bassitt was just the doctor ordered, throwing 106 pitches over six innings while garnering seven strikeouts. Sugano suffered cramping while warming up in the fifth and left the game after four innings.
Most of the scoring happened in the first inning. After Bassitt allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in the top of the frame, George Springer hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to give the Jays a 2-1 lead.
Things stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Tyler Heineman hit a solo home run off of Cionel Perez. It was his second career major league home run, and his first since 2019.
Brendon Little and Yariel Rodriguez each pitched a scoreless inning while Jeff Hoffman worked a perfect ninth, picking up his first save as a member of the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays were actually out-hit by the Orioles 9-7, but were able to take advantage of key opportunities, combined with Bassitt consistently working his way out of jams.
Monday sees the Washington Nationals come to town. Bowden Francis will make his season debut for the Blue Jays, while Mike Soroka will get the ball for the Nats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07PM ET
