Brett de Geus can't seem to catch a break. The right hander has been designated for assignment by the Florida Marlins, his third time reaching this fate since the end of the last regular season.
de Geus split 2024 between the Mariners, Marlins, and Blue Jays. He was DFA'd twice within that span as well, once by the Mariners on August 2nd, and again by the Marlins on September 10th. He finished out the season with the Blue Jays, but once again DFA'd when the team signed closer Jeff Hoffman in January.
The Blue Jays then traded him to the Pirates for cash on January 15th. A little over a month later he was DFA'd by Pittsburgh and re-claimed by the Marlins five days later.
While it appeared he might stick with the Marlins as he survived making it to opening day, he has now once again been DFA'd to make room for right hander Xzavion Curry.
The Marlins now have one week to trade de Geus or pass him through waivers. If he goes unclaimed, the Marlins will have a chance to outright him to the minor leagues.
It's another turn in a difficult offseason for de Geus, who has struggled to both results and a consistent home at the major league level.
While the results may not be there, de Geus represents a low-risk, lost-cost depth option for many teams and could find himself on another roster sooner rather than later.
His combined stats in 2024 were 0-0 with a 7.15 ERA, a 1.75 WHIP, and 7 strikeouts in 11.1 innings across 13 games.
