Tim Mayza is hurt. The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that the lefty reliever will be shut down from baseball activities for six weeks. This likely puts him out of service until at least the All-Star break.

The southpaw, who spent parts of seven seasons with the Blue Jays, originally went on the 15-Day IL over the weekend with a lat strain. Alex Stumpf of MLB.com notes that Mayza has also been dealing with a Teres Major injury.
Given that he is know being shut down for six weeks, he won't resume throwing until mid-June and then would likely need several bullpen outings before he is cleared to return to major league action. A transfer to the 60-Day IL is likely.
Transferring a player to the 60-Day IL allows a team to fulfil a roster spot without using up a player option, while the injured also accrues service time.
Mayza signed a one-year, $1.15MM free agent deal in February. While he started 2024 with the Blue Jays, he couldn't follow up on a strong 2023, and saw his ERA ballon to 8.03 in 35 appearances.
He had better luck after latching with the Yankees, allowing an even four earned runs per nine through 18 innings in the Bronx, striking out 12 against three walks. Despite this, he was non-tendered at the end of the season.
Even with Mayza's injury, the Pirates still have three lefties in the bullpen, including Mayza's former teammate with the Blue Jays Ryan Borucki, as well as Caleb Ferguson and Joey Wentz.
Look for all three to receive more action.
