The Red Sox added the 3X All-Star on a two-year, back-loaded deal this offseason and was the favourite to replace Craig Kimbrel as the team's primary closer. However, Aroldis Chapman is also on the team and is currently 4-4 in save opportunities, so look for Hendriks to ease in as a set-up man.
It's been a long road back for Hendriks, who hasn't appeared in a major league game since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023, which ended his successful tenure with the Chicago White Sox. He also battled cancer earlier that year.
Hendriks, who came up as a starter, made his debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2011 and was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays prior to the 2014 season.
After being traded to the Royals that July in deal for Danny Valencia, Hendricks was traded back to Toronto at the end of the season and was part of the 2015 Blue Jays team that made the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.
He was traded to Oakland, where he spent four seasons and developed into one of the game's top closers.
Originally from Perth, Hendriks has become one of the most successful Australian baseball players of all time and is a well-liked and respected figure throughout the league.
The 2X AL reliever of the year and 2021 AL saves leader, has 116 career saves.
