The Toronto Blue Jays fell to the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in Thursday afternoon action at Fenway Park. It was their second consecutive extra inning contest. With the loss, the Blue Jays drop to 8-6 on the season.
While the Blue Jays are still struggling to hit home runs, they are still being held up by pitching.
Chris Bassitt got the start for the Blue Jays while Walker Buehler took the mound for Boston.
Bassitt delivered, going 5.1 innings, giving up five hits and one earned run, while striking out five and walking one.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Alex Bregman singled on a line drive to bring home Jarren Duran and give the Red Sox the lead.
The Blue Jays answered with two in the seventh. After Will Wagner walked, back-to-back singles by
Myles Straw and
Tyler Heineman knotted the game at one.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in a rare pinch-hitting appearance, hit a grounder to 2nd that looked to be a double play. However, shortstop Trevor Story threw the ball wide of third base which Straw to score, putting the Blue Jays up 2-1.
After an error and a walk, a wild pitch by Yimi Garcia in a weird bottom of the eighth tied the game. He then worked around a hit and an intentional walk in the 9th to push the game into extra frames.
Although the Blue Jays got one in the tenth, the Red Sox scored two in the bottom half. Homeplate umpire Manny Gonzalez didn't call a potential strike three and then after Nick Sandlin loaded the bases, a Andres Gimenez couldn't get a grip on a weak ground ball, which brought home the winning run.
The Blue Jays begin a three game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday in what will be Anthony Santander's return to Camden Yards. Bowden Francis will be opposed by Tomoyuki Sugano. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM ET.
