The Houston Astros defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 in Spring Training action Friday evening. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 12-7-1.
The Blue Jays got out to an early lead thanks to a two-run triple from Andres Gimenez in the first inning. Ernie Clement followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Blue Jays up 3-0.
The Astros got one back in the second on a Chas McCormick double and a Quincy Hamilton RBI single. Zach Dezenzo added another with a solo home run in the fourth.
Then in the fifth inning, Yanier Diaz hit a two-run shot and Hamilton added an RBI double off Andrew Bash to put Houston up 5-3. The score remained that way until the seventh inning.
In the top of frame, Steward Berroa singled and promptly stole second. Josh Rivera walked and Rainer Nunez hit an RBI single pulling the Blue Jays to within one. An error by McCormick sent Rivera to third and Addison Barger drove him home on a sacrifice fly to tie the score.
With two out and two on in the ninth inning, Tyler Whitaker singled home Ben Gamel to give the Astros the walk-off.
Yariel Rodriguez arguably had his best start of the spring, giving up two runs in 3.2 innings while striking out four and walking three. Eric Lauer continued his impressive spring by striking out three over two scoreless inning and Tommy Nance pitched a scoreless eighth.
Richard Lovelady and Josh Walker also made appearances for the .Blue Jays .
The Blue Jays continue their Grapefruit League slate with a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET
