The Toronto Blue Jays opened up the 2025 season against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon. It was their first time opening the season at home under manager John Schneider, and only the 2nd time post-pandemic. It did not go well as the Blue Jays were shelled 12-2 by their division rival.
Jose Berrios got the ball for the Jays, while Zach Eflin did the honours for the Orioles. It was second consecutive opening day start against the Blue Jays, have done so last year as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.
The game got started on an emotional note with a tribute to the late Rickey Henderson, a rousing rendition of the Anthems from the cast of the Lion King and honorary first pitch from old friend Kevin Kiermaier There was also a land acknowledgement from the chief of the Mississauga of The Credit First Nation.
The other big news was that Alan Roden, star of Spring Training and newly christened MLBer made his major league debut, starting in right field. He went 1-2, recording his first major league hit.
While Berrios lasted five innings, he was the victim of multiple home runs, giving up a solo shot to Adley Rutschman in the first, Tyler O'Neill in the third, and Cedric Mullins. In total, Berrios gave up six runs.
Mullins added another home run off Chad Green in the seventh, and Rutschman later added a second home run in the eighth, going back-to-back with Jordan Westburg.
Nick Sandlin and Richard Lovelady were the only Blue Jays pitchers not to give up any runs.
