The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-2 in Grapefruit League action on Tuesday in a game that was dominated by pitching.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 11-6-1 in Spring Training.
The game was scoreless through five innings as Chris Bassitt and Twins starter Andrew Morris exchanged zeros. In total, Bassitt went 4.2 innings.
After Mason Fluharty got the final out of the fifth, Jeff Hoffman surrendered a two-run home run in the sixth to give the Twins a 2-0 lead. However, the Blue Jays would slowly chip away.
After three walks sandwiched around a fielder's choice to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, Bo Bichette hit a long sacrifice fly to centre field to bring the Blue Jays to within one.
In the seventh, Daulton Varsho hit a solo home run - his third dinger of the spring - to knot the game at two.
Then, in the eighth, with two out and Davis Schneider standing on second base, shortstop Josh Rivera flared one in shallow to left field, scoring Schneider and giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead.
Reliever Nick Robertson, making his spring debut for the Blue Jays, surrendered a lead-off walk to start the ninth, but then struck out Patrick Winkel, got Jeferson Morales to fly out and struck out Rayne Doncon to preserve the win and pick up the save.
Kevin Gowdy, Tommy Nance, and Brendon Little also made appearances for the Blue Jays, with Gowdy getting the final out of the sixth and Nance and Little each pitching a scoreless inning.
The Blue Jayshave an off day on Wednesday and will continue their Spring Training slate against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
