Easton Lucas got the ball for Toronto and had his rough outing as a member of the Blue Jays rotation. Meanwhile, he was opposed by Grant Holmes.
Atlanta hit Lucas hard early and often. Sean Murphy hit a two-run home run in the first and Austin Riley added his own two-run shot in the third. Then in the top of the fifth, Ozzie Albies hit an RBI double before Riley hit his second home run of the game, this one of the three run variety, to put the Jays in an 8-0 hole.
Holmes meanwhile, no-hit the Hays until the top of the 6th. It was broken up by
Myles Straw, who hit his first home run as a member of the Blue Jays and only the seventh of his big league career.
Another highlight was the fans giving Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a standing ovation during his first plate appearance. Vladdy, appreciating the gesture, tipped his helmet to the crowd in acknowledgement.
Guerrero hit the ball hard in all of his at-bats, but they were all right at Braves defenders. It was emblematic of the Blue Jays night - and season - as they were constantly under the baseball all night.
Jacob Barnes and Yariel Rodriguez each did a great job of stemming the tide, pitching two scoreless innings in relief.
The Blue Jays made things interesting thanks to a two-out, two-run double from
Tyler Heineman in the eighth. Ernie Clement added an RBI single in the ninth. However, Aaron Bummer struck out Alan Roden for the final out of the game.
The Blue Jays and Braves continue their series on Tuesday in a game that will feature a great pitching matchup. Kevin Gausman will take on Spencer Schwellenbach. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07PM ET.
