Throwing 53 pitches in a game is quite common for a starting pitcher. Throwing 53 pitches in one inning is virtually unheard of. That's the unenviable positionKevin Gausman found himself in in the third inning of Sunday's game against the New York Yankees.

It was made all the more strange by the fact that the Blue Jays ace had thrown just 18 in the first two combined. A couple of bad breaks and elevated pitches later, and the Yankees tagged Gausman for six runs in the third.
He also wasn't helped by umpire Chris Conroy's strike zone; both him and manager John Schneider were ejected following the arguing of balls and strikes.
But it's the pitch count that's really important.
Gausman's 53 pitch 3rd inning tied a Blue Jays record originally set by Woody Williams all the way back in 1998. It's also the most thrown in an inning since Cameron Vieauxof the Pirates did so on July 1, 2022.
It's an unfortunate record to be associated with, and elevated pitch counts can cause problems, especially this early in the season. However, Schneider and the Blue Jays don't seem overly concerned about Gausman or the health of his arm.
Gausman has been Mr. reliable for the Blue Jays over the past three seasons, and there is no reason to think that he won't find his groove next start.
With an off-day on Monday, Gausman will be able to recover on normal rest and get back out there in five days time.
There was another cause for concern after he slipped on the dugout steps following his ejection, but Gausman avoided any major injuries.
