Things aren't necessarily looking all that rosy for Max Scherzer on the injury front. The future Hall Of Famer left his Blue Jays debut after three innings with right lat soreness and it appears that he might miss his next start as well.

After Saturday afternoon's loss to the Orioles, Keegan Matheson offered up a number of updates on X with regards to Scherzer's injury.
The Blue Jays have placed Scherzer on the 15 Day IL.
Even before his first pitch, Scherzer could tell that something wasn't quite right, his body not 100% during his bullpen session, but he tried to fight through it as it he took the mound in the first inning.
During a post-game interview, Scherzer opined that his lat injury was 100% related to his thumb. While the problematic digit has been feeling better on the whole, everything else has been overcompensating because of it.
«This is 100% related to the thumb, «My shoulder, everything is compensating because of that thumb. The thumb is slightly better, but I still have discomfort in there. Even though I was able to grip the ball a little bit better today, I still have discomfort in my thumb. My arm is making adjustments because of that. That's a recipe for disaster.»

As things stand, Scherzer is likely to miss his next start. What happens beyond that is anybody's guess. The Blue Jays are somewhat fortunate in that, due to an off day on Thursday, a fifth won't be needed for over a week and the rotation can simply move up a day.
Yariel Rodriguez would be next in line should the Blue Jays need it and then potentially Jake Bloss after that should Scherzer require an extended absence.
Scherzer won't be put on the IL for now, but also won't pitch until his thumb is healthy.
