The Kansas City Royals have brought back a familiar face, signing catcher Luke Maile to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training.
We have signed C Luke Maile to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.
It’s a fitting birthday gift for Maile, who turns 35 today.
The former Blue Jays backstop has been a fixture around the majors for more than a decade, debuting in 2015 and carving out a career as a dependable depth option.
He spent time with the Royals during the 2025 season, shuttling on and off the roster and appearing in 25 games.
In 54 plate appearances, Maile posted a .244/.346/.356 slash line.

Offense has never been the calling card for Maile. Over his career, he owns a .209/.277/.320 line and a 63 wRC+, underscoring his limited production at the plate.
His value, however, has consistently come on the defensive side.
Maile has earned strong marks over the years for his work behind the dish.
Both FanGraphs and Baseball Prospectus rate him as an above-average pitch framer.
Statcast is a bit less enthusiastic about his framing, grading it just below average, but still credits him with solid blocking ability.
For Kansas City, Maile is likely penciled into the same type of depth role he filled a year ago.
Franchise icon Salvador Perez has begun to scale back his catching workload as he moves through his mid-30s, though he has still caught roughly 90 games in each of the past three seasons.
The Royals also dealt Freddy Fermin to the Padres at last year’s trade deadline, a move that reflected their confidence in prospect Carter Jensen, who made his major-league debut in 2025.
Maile enters the organization as an Article XX(b) free agent — essentially a standard free agent with at least six years of major-league service time who finished the previous season on a 40-man roster.
Under the current collective bargaining agreement, players in this category receive uniform opt-out dates in minor-league contracts, giving Maile the chance to test the market five days before Opening Day, then again on May 1 and June 1 if he remains in the minors. May 1 and on June 1.
