José Berríos is getting closer to returning to a major-league mound.

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios is expected to throw between 70 and 75 pitches for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.
If that outing goes smoothly, he could be in line to rejoin the big-league club shortly afterward, he told Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith on Sunday.
Jose Berrios says he'll leave it to the Blue Jays' front office & coaching staff to determine when he returns to the MLB level, but says "physically, I've been feeling great." Slated to throw 70-75 pitches at AAA Tues after which he could be ready for MLB if the outing goes well.
Even with his positive progress, the decision on when he’ll be activated will ultimately rest with the Blue Jays’ front office and coaching staff.
Tuesday’s appearance will mark Berríos’ third rehab start, following two outings with the Class-A Dunedin Blue Jays.
He opened the season on the injured list due to a stress fracture in his elbow.
Although he appeared healthy at the start of spring training, inflammation was detected during a physical as he attempted to join Team Puerto Rico for the World Baseball Classic.
A subsequent consultation with Dr. Keith Meister in Texas confirmed the stress fracture.
Before the injury setback, Berríos made two spring starts for Toronto, including a strong four-inning shutout performance against the New York Yankees.

This latest issue is unrelated to the injury that sidelined Berrios late last season.

In 2025, Berríos pitched 166 innings across 31 appearances (30 starts), posting a 4.17 ERA.
He was placed on the injured list on September 25 with right elbow inflammation—the first injury-related absence of his MLB career—and did not return during Toronto’s run to the World Series.
It marked his lowest workload in a full season since 2017. Prior to that, he had made exactly 32 starts in six of the previous seven seasons, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.
A healthy return from Berríos would significantly bolster Toronto’s rotation, which is also expected to get a boost with Trey Yesavage slated to make his season debut on Tuesday.
