The Toronto Blue Jays have issued another update about Max Scherzer The future Hall of Famer left after three innings with right late soreness and was later placed on the injured list with right thumb inflammation.
Scherzer is back with the team after visiting a hand specialist in Pennsylvania. Part of that treatment was receiving a cortisone shot, which the team hopes will abate some of the soreness and inflammation in his thumb.
Scherzer, who was limited to nine starts last year because of similar issues, has received cortisone shots in the past. While his thumb responded positively to his last injection in October, Scherzer also noted that he wasn't pitching at the time.
Scherzer is smart enough and experienced enough to know that he can't - and shouldn't - pitch through the pain.
"You can't override and pitch through that pain. Because once that's compromised, it compromises the rest of your arm. You've got to let the cortisone shot work. Typically I really respond well to cortisone. I've had plenty of these shots over my career."
Scherzer received the shot in the fatty part of the joint, where the thumb meets the rest of the hand.
Manager John Schneider has said that the team is taking it one day at a time, and that there is no hard timeline as to when Scherzer will start throwing again.
"When he starts throwing, we'll kind of play it by ear. Hopefully it's not too long but we don't really have a set date, a target date or a timeline. We'll just see how he feels in the next couple days." - John Schneider
The good news is that the cortisone seems to be working.
