As was reported yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. appear close to signing an extension worth over $500MM. Now, more information about the potential signing is coming to light.
Mike Rodriguez - who goes by Mike
Mike Deportes on social media - was the first to break the story yesterday. In a follow up post on X, Rodriguez has said that the deal does not include any deferred money.
That part had been a sticking point in previous negotiations with Guerrero. In his wide-ranging interview on a Spanish-language sports podcast in December, he had indicated that he was not interested in any deferred money.
It's also a concept that has invited criticism throughout the league as it allowed teams like
the Dodgers and
Mets to spend mercilessly.
To add another layer of intrigue, fellow Spanish-language insider
Hector Gomez has claimed that an announcement of the deal could be made as early as this weekend.
Gomez had also first announced back in March that the Blue Jays were set to offer a new contract for 14 years in $500-600MM range.
While Rogers have always had deep pockets, the Blue Jays front office has always been fairly reticent when it to valuations and spending.
If Vlad accepts, welcome to the future. If he doesn't, say hello to free agency.
