The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Canadian superstar first baseman and World Series hero Freddie Freeman on the 10-Day IL with an ankle sprain. The move is retroactive to March 31st, so Freeman is eligible to return in one week's time.
Freeman, who has not played since Saturday, rolled his ankle after slipping in the shower. IL placements can backdated by three days and given the fact that the Dodgers didn't place him on the IL right away suggests that they don't think the injury is serious and that he will only miss the minimum amount of time.
Freeman was plagued by ankle troubles late last season, though he was able to manage it enough to become a World Series legend after his grand slam in game one. Still, he ended up requiring surgery in December. While healthy enough to start the season, this mishap will now set him back a week.
Manager Dave Roberts said that Freeman underwent an MRI and that results "came back the way the wanted them to"
"The thought was he could have played, but we just felt that -- even in talking to Freddie and the training staff -- there was potential downside, if we played him, to make it worse. And given the time of year, the off-days that we've had [it] just made sense for him to stay back, not travel, fly, increase swelling, and then be ready to go, hopefully, when we get home.»
IL stints are an extremely rare occurrence for the 8X All-Star. He last went on the IL in 2020 after a positive COVID Test. Prior to that, his most non-illness-related IL stint was in 2017, when he missed over two months with a fractured wrist.
As the Dodgers had on off-day on Friday that have yet to announce a corresponding roster move. They will likely call up another hitter in advance of their series against Philadelphia.
While Freeman is out, expect Kike Hernandez to get the majority of starts at first base.
