The Toronto Blue Jays are suddenly thin on starting pitching.

Berrios, who had been recently moved into the bullpen following a tough season, has been diagnosed with elbow inflammation. RHP Paxton Schultz has been recalled to take his place on the roster.
It's been a tough year for Berrios, who failed to make 32 starts for the first time since 2017, not counting 2020. On Wednesday, he made his first appearance out of the bullpen this season - and only 2nd of his career - in relief of Max Scherzer, and gave up three earned runs in two innings of work.
News: Jose Berrios is headed to the IL with right elbow inflammation. He's on route to get an MRI. Paxton Schultz will be the counter
All in all, Berrios was 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 2025.
Berrios' injury further complicates the Blue Jays postseason pitching plans. Kevin Gausman and Shane Bieber are locks. Max Scherzer's place could be in doubt following consecutive rough starts and Bassit's timeline is unknown. That leaves rookie Trey Yesavage and swing man Eric Lauer to potentially go 3-4.

Schultz recalled, previously set record in major league debut

Taking Berrios' place on the roster is Paxton Schultz. Schultz has been up and down with the Blue Jays a few times this season, last appearing in a game on August 24th.
Schultz had a much-talked about debut back in April. That day, he came on in relief, and tossed 4.1 scoreless innings and struck out eight.
While the results since then have been mixed, he does offer the Blue Jays length.
He will be active in time for tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox
