The New York Mets are exploring their infield flexibility with former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.

New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is preparing for potential roster challenges by giving infielder Bo Bichette experience across multiple positions.
In an interview with New York Post's Mike Puma Mendoza revealed that the former Blue Jays shortstop returned to his natural position on Friday, revisiting duties in case the Mets need him as a backup during the season.
«He didn't get tested, but it was good to get him back there,» Mendoza said following the Mets' 4-3 exhibition loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

If Bichette can handle shortstop in emergency situations, the Mets wouldn't need to carry a sixth infielder, freeing up a roster spot for an extra outfielder on the 26-man roster.
«We can go a lot of different ways here, and that is why Bo [got] that opportunity today at shortstop,» Mendoza said. «I think after spending the whole spring training, all his work at third base, it's kind of getting him back familiar.»
Offensively, Bichette's bat more than compensates for any defensive shortcomings.
The Blue Jays better hope that they won't feel the effects of not having Bichette in their lineup for this upcoming season and beyond.
Otherwise, it may inadvertently set the team back instead.
In 14 spring games with the Mets, the 28-year-old infielder has hit .294 with an .846 OPS, recording six runs, one home run, eight RBIs, and even a stolen base.
Bichette's career achievements are notable, including leading the American League in hits twice, earning two All-Star selections, and appearing in a World Series.
Bichette, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Blue Jays, can opt out of his Mets contract to test free agency again following the 2026 season.
